"Our skin is a kind of spacesuit in which we can maneuver through an atmosphere of harsh gasses, cosmic rays, radiation from the sun, and obstacles of all sorts."
A Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman, p.101

Statement:
I was inspired by this part of the reading to sketch a small self-portrait of myself in space. This quote made me think about the uncertainties and unknowns of life, similar to those of the vast universe we exist in. I imagined floating through open space, and the feeling of letting go of control. The various obstacles we face in our day to day existence are what shape our experiences and help us grow, and our skin is all that physically protects us from the outside world.

"Some children who live in emotionally destructive homes just stop growing."
A Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman, p.75

Statement:
When I read this quote I imagined holding dead flowers in my hands.  For this piece, I incorporated flowers as a symbol of growth, and painted them like I imagined a young child would paint flowers. Parents often frame small works of art that their children make, and keep them as sentimental objects. They are layered on a dark background because I associate emotional destruction with darkness.
